My Reflection on Reading
I can say that I have never been a regular reader. When I was a little girl I learnt to read very fast and easy but I don´t know the reasons why I have never been atracted by reading. Perhaps my parents didn´t instilled reading habits into me from a very young. My sister and I prefered listening to my mother telling us stories or singing us a song to reading a book. When I was little I lived in a small town and we spent the whole day playing on the street after school. Besides I was a good student and any teachers never said to my mum that I should read more or whatever. Having said this, I have to say that I have always read because of education or information not for pleasure and this keep happening now.
Due to my lack of reading during my childhood and adolescence I think I am not fully competent in reading comprehension since it is a big effort for me to understand interferes or poetry texts.
Looking at the pictures, I can identify myself with picture number 3 and 4. I just read for education, information or work. However, I have heard such wonderful things about reading that I feel I have missed something in my life. This is the reason why I give to reading top priority in my class. I let my students minutes free in class to read whetever they like, we have a reading corner, they can visit the library whenver they want, etc.
When reading as a whole class my main goal is to catch my students´ attention to any reading. For doing so, I plan pre, while and post reading activities through which children can predict what the story is about, activate their background knowledge, raise their motivation, focus better, develop their creativity and imagination and so on. My favourite reading strategies are to predict and to skim. It is very funny at the end of the class to check if we were right with the ending of a story before starting to read. Top-buttom strategies are very suitable for students in primary eduaction since their level of English is very low and even more they are sarting to learn in their mother tongue.
As for myself and my students when it comes to reading in english, the books chosen are full of images, well-known and traditional stories they already know in their language. They have got simple vocabulary, structures, language. I like my students feel the reading tasks as achievable so the level chosen in books are always just a bit above their actual level.
I hope my students love reading all kind of books and not only educational, informative books as I am used to.
